Do you own any yoga DVDs? Aren’t they always set in these beautiful outdoors locations? I’ve never come across one that shows a sweaty group of sweatpants-clad people in a tiny gym room, have you? It’s always these peaceful, flower-filled grasslands, or maybe on a pool deck with an ocean in the background.
If you watch enough of these kind of DVDs, you start to believe yoga is meant to be done outdoors. Have you ever wanted to try it outdoors? (Yoga, that is. Get your mind out of the gutter.)
You’re in luck. Starting the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Omaha will begin its very own outdoor yoga festival. This nine-week session, called Yoga Rocks the Park-Omaha, will be held on Sundays at 4 p.m. It will be held on the green lawn of Midtown Crossing. You bring your own mat.
Each week will include an hour and a half of all-levels yoga instruction. The cool thing about it is this weekly yoga event features live or DJ music. Believe me, the flute-filled New Age-soundtrack accompanying most yoga DVDs gets old after a few plays.
And, if you have children between the ages of 3 and 10, you can bring them along too so they can have fun at Camp Yoga Rocks. It’s held a few feet away from where the adults will be (hmm, maybe that’s going to get a little loud and distracting…). Children will be able to enjoy hula-hooping, face-painting, story time and kid-friendly asana instruction from Omaha’s top children’s yoga teachers.
To register, go here. Registration appears to be free, though there is an optional $5 donation for each class – which is a killer deal for a yoga class. YRP donates a percentage of its revenue to the non-profit 501 3 (c) Yoga World Reach.
